Memorial and Eternal Flame

June 24, 2013

This memorial is to honor those in Irkutsk who contributed to support the Russian efforts in World War II, or as the Russians call it, the Great Patriotic War. Although there was no fighting here and this was actually a place to which the Russians fell back and brought things which they wanted to save, the people of Irkutsk were an integral part of the Russian homefront.

The eternal flame in this memorial was lit with a flame brought from the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Solder in Moscow, just outside the Kremlin.
